The construction of first Burn Centre in the federal capital will commence here on Tuesday at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) with an estimated cost of Rs 180 million. According to details, Federal Health Minister Muhammad Nasir Khan will be the chief guest of the foundation stone laying ceremony. Former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali had directed the PIMS administration to step up their efforts for establishment of a burn centre in Islamabad.

There was no burn centre in the federal capital. About one million population of the federal capital is facing problems as public and private sector hospitals lack the facility to treat and rehabilitate the burn victims.

Countless people in the twin cities die every year due to non-availability of burn unit in major hospitals especially a large number of women, who are victims of domestic violence (acid throwing, stove burning), have no place to go for treatment.

The burn victims are being referred to Kharian Cantt and Wah Cantt for appropriate medical treatment as health institutions like PIMS, federal government services hospital (FGSH), capital development authority (CDA)'s Capital Hospital besides many other private hospitals including Shifa International, International Islamic Medical Center and Ali Medical Center lack the facility to properly treat the burn victims.

The only well equipped burn unit in the country is the Army Burn Center in Kharian which only accepts those civilians who can afford the high expenses of treatment, which requires the combination of a number of surgical and general medical skills including paediatrics, plastic surgery, infection control, palliative care and labour intensive critical care nursing.

The burn victims need intensive, one-on-one treatment from health professionals such as physiotherapists, psychiatrists and psychologists.

It is hoped that Burn Centre in Islamabad would be very helpful for the people of other cities and areas including NWFP and AJK, as they are also deprived of this facility.
